Sorano stands out in the Tuff, surrounded by nature and the Lente river which with its constant babbling acts as the village’s soundtrack. The town is immersed in the most authentic and unspoiled Maremma, an area from which the artist was inspired, developing a project focused on a visual experiment in human anatomy, sculpture and photography.

Serhiy makes an attempt to look inside and out at the same time, to release pain and immerse one’s feelings in the context of sculpture and photography. To do this, he chose two of the most beautiful and characteristic places in the village: the Orsini Fortress and the Masso Leopoldino. A bronze sculpture of a deformed female bust will be exhibited on the terrace of the Masso Leopoldino. A deformation that, for the artist, is caused by the constant pressure of time, globalisation and war, making a new form of beauty for a body that has lived through time and has been shaped by encounters that hurt, modify and enrich it. In the Orsini Fortress, four photos taken by the artist will be exhibited, depicting plaster busts captured at night in the Sorano village. Through the photos, the artist suggests an integration between landscape and sculpture. The works are placed in two distant points yet remain in constant dialogue.

I OFTEN USE MULTIMEDIA TECHNIQUES SUCH AS PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO-ART TO CREATE PERFORMANCES OR ART INSTALLATIONS. THIS TIME, I ALSO WORKED WITH EXPERIMENTAL SCULPTURE. I MADE THIS DECISION DURING MY REFLECTIONS ON ITALY. I CAME TO REALISE THIS AS SOON AS I ARRIVED IN THE MYSTICAL TOWN OF SORANO IN TUSCANY. THE VILLAGE, WITH ITS RESIDENTS, REMINDS ME OF A HUGE LIVING SCULPTURE, CARVED IN TUFF THE LOCAL VOLCANIC ROCK. AND IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST

Serhiy Horobets (Lviv, Ukraine, 1985) takes an experimental approach to visual arts, including alternative photography, painting, printmaking, video art or multimedia. For Serhiy, photography is an ideal form for creativity and it is able to offer opportunities to bring together the abstract (inner) feelings and experiences with a concrete, actual reality in the same plane and at the same time. Currently based in Potsdam, Germany, he has been the Chief director of the video broadcast at the Lviv National Philharmonic (2019-2021) and the official graphic designer in «Vere Music Fund» (2021-2022). Some recent projects are: La musica è pace, 2022, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Italy; Live painting performance, 2022, Chamber music hall of the Philharmonie Berlin. Solo exhibitions: Distance, 2020, Liechtensteinisches Landes Museum; ALCIDE, 2021, Lviv National Opera, Ukraine.

The administrative centre of a very large municipal area, Sorano has a lot to offer artistically, archaeologically and environmentally. It’s a village of about 3,000 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto which stands on a tufaceous spur overlooking the valley of the Lente river. It is beautiful and unique landscape, rich in greenery, dominated by tuff, where one can find traces of its ancient past. Sorano and its surrounding area constitute a single, large open-air museum in which evidence of different eras and civilizations can be found and merged; a corner of the Maremma where history and nature have merged, creating beautiful scenery. The historic centre is a good example of medieval urbanisation. The old village, marked by the coat of arms and symbols of the Aldobrandeschi, Orsini and Lorena families, is closed to the south by the mighty Orsini Fortress and to the north by the Masso Leopoldino. After crossing under the Ferrini arch, you arrive at the Porta dei Merli from which you can reach the Lente river and access the ancient cave roads. The collegiate church of San Nicola di Bari dating back to at least the 12th century, and the small town hall of the Orsini family with a 15th century doorway, overlook the small square. On the west side of the village lies the Borgo neighbourhood, while on the east side you will find the Jewish ghetto and Casalino neighbourhood. The oldest agglomeration perched around the tuff rock today is called Masso Leopoldino, a panoramic terrace from which you can enjoy an impressive view of the town below. The mighty fortress was built by the Aldobrandeschi and enlarged by the Orsini. It was built in order to make Sorano the most imposing military bastion of a small but autonomous fief. Sorano manages to maintain its medieval atmosphere while emphasising the relationship between man and the earth.
