In questo frangente

Enrico Malatesta, Texture sonora 1, 2022. Natural membrane mounted on a 20-inch frame. Ph Enrico Malatesta

"A surface between map and sonic instrument that helps orient oneself, but not in a conventional way: it instead invites one to get lost, to explore space through touch and listening. An open-ended instrument that encourages slowing down and paying attention to the sounds that pass through Ischitella and their resonances."

In questo frangente is an acoustic, tactile, and visual map that invites in an abstract and subjective experience of the soundscape of Ischitella.
The brass plate, treated through oxidation and fire, is engraved with symbols and graphic signs that transcribe environmental sounds, urban reverberations and acoustic traces, outlining a constellation of sensory cues that prompts passersby to rework their own listening experience.
The map presents itself both as a resonant surface and as an unconventional topographic chart: it can be traversed with the gaze, struck with the hands, listened to with the ears, and crossed with the body. It does not describe the territory nor orient toward a destination, but rather opens up a personal, situated and embodied way of engaging with this portion of the world.
Inspired by A Journey Around My Room by Xavier de Maistre, the work understands movement as an intimate and perceptual gesture. Like ancient tactile maps and memory sticks, it unfolds sensitive geographies in the encounter between the territory and those who move through it.

Public Program

In the making of listening: unstable maps of Ischitella

27 and 28 May 2026, h. 18:00
Museo Civico Cigno Nero, Via Nazzario Sauro, Ischitella (FG)

Through practices of listening, walking, and sensory mapping, participants in the participatory workshop led by Enrico Malatesta and Chiara Pavolucci will explore the territory through sound, co-creating maps made of perceptions, memories, and acoustic traces. The body and movement become tools of relation, and the landscape reveals itself as a shared, situated, and constantly evolving experience.

Borgo
Ischitella (FG)

Perched between Lake Varano and the Adriatic Sea, Ischitella lies in the heart of the Gargano. Its historic center—hosting Palazzo Ventrella, the Mother Church, Sant’Eustachio, and the Convent of San Francesco—tells centuries of history. A powerful symbol of local identity is the Tree of San Francesco, an ancient cypress associated with the tradition of the Saint’s passage: uprooted by a storm yet still alive, it stands as a sign of faith and resilience. Even today, though dried out, it remains a guardian of memory and popular tales, deeply rooted in the local identity. The patronal festivals of Sant’Eustachio and of the Madonna Assunta with San Rocco mark the year with rituals, music, and conviviality. A land of olive trees and citrus groves, the town maintains a deep connection with the Gargano landscape.
